The clinic will cover basic setup, strategies, and techniques for fishing our Southern California surf. We will read the water both from high up on the bluff above the beach as well as from the water's edge. You will receive help with your double haul cast and with retrieve techniques. You will learn to recognize Mole Crab beds on the beach and, with a bit of luck, how to land large fish in the surf.
Driving Directions: From the 101 North take the Padaro Ln exit, EXIT 88, toward Santa Claus Ln. Turn left onto Padaro Ln. Take the 1st left onto Santa Claus Ln. Continue south on Santa Claus Ln. to the southernmost porta potty just before the row of shops. The porta potty is where we will meet. Parallel parking is available on both sides of the road.
It is about an hour and half drive from Santa Monica. (Set your GPS for 3804 Santa Claus Ln.)
Plan to arrive by 7:30 so you can don your waders and string up your rods before the clinic starts at 8:00. The prime part of the rising tide will be from about 9:00 to 11:00.
The clinic will begin promptly at 8:00 AM. Plan to be suited up in waders at that time.  Be sure to get your 2015 California Fishing License with the Saltwater Enhancement Stamp. You will also need a hat and eye protection. Polarized glasses are highly recommended.  Chest high waders with an overlapping water proof wading jacket are recommended. Boot foot waders work well if you've got them. many of us use stocking foot waders with wet sandals or divers booties. your regular stream wading shoes will work on an infrequent basis, but be sure to thoroughly clean and rinse them in fresh water afterwards. A small box or patch for flies, one or two spools of tippet, forceps and nippers are all you need to carry. Vests and chest packs really aren't necessary. Gary will have half a dozen stripping baskets and rods and reels available, but if you have your own gear, by all means, bring it.
Gary & Bill are going to provide flies but it wouldn't hurt to bring some of your own if you have them. (Fishermen's Spot has a good selection.)
